Creature from the Black Lagoon tells the story of an archaeologist who finds the remains of a prehistoric fish creature, he enlists the help of an old friend who is a diver and marine biologist. An expedition is set up to investigate the nearby black lagoon. There, however, a monstrous fish creature awaits their arrival.

The story wasn't very big, but it contained everything a monster movie like this needs. The film is a precursor to Jaws and Alien. Jaws in the sense of using the water as an unsafe place and to make people afraid of what lurks in the depths. Alien in the sense of the expedition that encounters an unforeseen creature and falls victim to it.

The sample looked particularly good. Can't remember seeing a man in a suit pass so well for a monster before. The underwater scenes in particular were impressive, especially since there aren't even air bubbles coming out of the monster's mouth. The actor in the costume had to hold his breath for 4 minutes and then he was quickly taken out of the water. The appearance of the sea monster is partly based on medieval engravings of the Monkfish and the Bishopfish, non-existent mythical creatures.

All in all, it was quite an entertaining movie, although I thought there were a lot of boring moments in it. At least it wasn't too long. Fun fact, Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman watched this film every year on his birthday.

“I can tell you something about this place. The boys around here call it "The Black Lagoon" - a paradise. Only they say nobody has ever come back to prove it.”

Great horror classic. You can immediately see where Guillermo del Toro got his inspiration from for The Shape of Water, and Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of the Mexican director's favorite films. The underwater scenes look fantastic (especially the one with Kay and the monster), the monster itself looks amazing and the setting is nicely chosen. The ending is a bit unsatisfactory and the acting isn't always convincing, but if you can see through that, an atmospheric and beautifully made horror film awaits. With few resources, but an incredible amount of creativity.

After the Shape of Water I had to watch this movie where The Gill Man originated. That was completely unknown in the Shape of Water. Fortunately, we find the "origin" here. It is funny that the scientists also refer to the so-called Lungfishes, focusing on fossil rock. These fish can live both in water and on land because they have lungs. These oldest fossil fish only live in Australia. Well, The Gill Man must have been derived from that The old film from 1954 is completely in black and white, but that is certainly not a punishment. Funny thing is, you can also watch this movie in 3D. Yes we are talking about a movie from 1954!! I haven't done this yet, but the normal 2D movie already looks very good. Even underwater the picture is good enough. Anyway, the pictures are beautifully shot in the Amazon of South America. The cave-like environment where The Gill Man occasionally ventures also looks good. I'm really positively surprised by this film that is pretty standard in terms of story, but otherwise very exciting until the end. I'm always amazed that old movies always end so abruptly. That is no different in this film. Well, with a happy ending. A sequel has been made but it has more of a King Kong popcorn content. Incidentally, also in this film, The Gill Man loves a beautiful woman. The films are not much different in that regard.

I just looked at the cast and I was surprised that at least two members are still alive. The Gill Man underwater is now 88 (someone else above water was dead) and Julie Adams this beautiful woman is now 92 years old. The rest is as far as can be seen now deceased. Incidentally, I have also seen color photos of this film, but it is not clear to me whether this film was also in color.

Anyway, I really liked The Creature of the Black Lagoon!
