OK.

A horror/western, they don't get made like that anymore. And Zahler knows how to put his stamp on that, but it's especially the end where he actually does that. The beginning is a bit slower and more of a drama.

Story also starts a bit boring, and then 132 minutes is quite long. It's not the acting, although I don't think Wilson's head fits in here. It is only horror towards the end when those cannibals come into the picture, the screams of them are nicely done by the way.

Only towards the end it can be called gross, and we are presented with a few difficult scenes. They just pull the film over the line. For the rest, westerns are definitely not for me, and this is proof of that.

I'm not a big fan of westerns, but with Bone Tomahawk S. Craig Zahler delivers a really interesting mix of genres. But he has a strong cast. Kurt Russell is consistently good, with excellent roles from Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox. But the star of the show is Richard Jenkins, who plays a beautiful, hilarious and poignant role. He remains a hero, that man! The fact that we have a range of interesting characters here also makes their journey captivating and exciting, even if not a whole lot seems to be happening. There is always a threat and in the meantime there is enough room for lightness in the quiet moments. Found the movie astonishingly witty, at times. Gradually, that atmosphere turns 180 degrees, resulting in a chilling scene that you will not soon forget. Always great when a movie can make you laugh, tremble and keep you on the edge of your seat, even in the calm moments.

4 stars.
