Before I Wake plot

"Fear your dreams."

Jessie and Mark decide to adopt a sweet eight-year-old boy. His name is Cody. What they don't know is that the child is terrified of falling asleep. At first they think this is due to the unstable living situations that Cody has experienced. But then they find out the terrible truth.

Nice.

Flanagan is establishing himself as a horror director who always manages to do things differently. That means that his films are rarely full-blooded horror (and can therefore invariably count on a number of low marks with that criticism), but they always manage to bring something fascinating.

Before I Wake is indeed rather dark fantasy with a number of jump scares. The atmosphere is really good, often shots where there is more to see in the background than in the foreground. The fantasy part is also nicely designed. CG is not technically advanced, but aesthetically it is very nice.

In terms of acting, the film would have benefited from a look of better actors. The baby is still good, but Bosworth is not the most gifted actress and Jane is just bad. The movie immediately gets a lot better when it disappears from the scene. Sadly miscast.

Remains atmospheric throughout the film. Nicely designed, fantasy elements are original and it is also dark enough to generate some tension here and there. Probably not a suitable film for an evening of old-fashioned horror, but who cares if you get some originality in return?

3.5*

I found the film messy - I never knew which approach or which genre the makers were going for. horror? Drama? fantasy? I'm all for experimentation and "outside the box" thinking, but it didn't pay off for this film. The characters are static (your husband is swallowed, but that changes little or nothing in your attitude and state of mind? And that while you have been exchanging pitiful looks with this man for a long time because of the death of your child? ).
The punch line is still okay, but deserved a better movie.

I found the first 50 minutes in particular very fascinating, the drama element worked better than expected and the mystery surrounding the boy's dreams makes at least the first half interesting enough to want to watch further, also it can also be said that Jacob Tremblay has convincingly portrayed his role.

But then, the makers suddenly found it necessary to fall into old predictable horror clichés and cheap scare effects. I got the impression that this had to be the choice of a big studio to get involved, because the first half is clearly different.

The first 50 minutes of this film undoubtedly deserve a 3.5, but the last 40 minutes (unfortunately) lose a star.
