What has stayed with me the most is the retarded love scene that comes out of nowhere. It's really hilarious how poorly timed this one is. Alone in the Dark is not much else. The CGI is indeed very bad and I wondered during the film if such a project wouldn't come into its own with a little more suggestion through the use of tangible creatures. No idea why Boll always tends to show everything, accompanied by pompous metal or techno or whatever. Every time comes at the cost of an attempt to build tension, which is just a shame. The acting is still quite okay for a Boll game film adaptation and Alone in the Dark still looks good, but it is anything but a high flyer. It is now more than clear that Uwe can better focus on original scripts and smaller projects.

2*

There's only one reason this movie is in the flop 100, and that's the director's name. I do believe that there are people who genuinely think this is a bad film, but the majority is living proof that humans are herd animals and are too afraid to give Alone In The Dark an honest judgment. You will only be looked at with the neck, the horror!

Because is he really that bad? Of course not. Uwe Boll has once again come up with a game film that is enjoyable to say the least. The ending is definitely action packed. What I had some trouble with was the build. Sometimes it is very slow, sometimes very fast. I think Boll could have made something better of this by working out the plot better. With more depth you would undoubtedly have had a better story. Christian Slater plays one of his better roles. That mainly means that he was not annoying. The rest is also somewhat invisible. Uwe Boll wouldn't be Uwe Boll if he had crammed some bizarre stuff into the film. That sex scene really came out of nowhere. Furthermore: average film with reasonable monsters.

flop?

Not a bad film at all, which should be classified as a B-movie, only one with just a little more budget. Yet the tone and atmosphere is a B-movie in every way and you notice that when 1 of the first sequences depicts a fight in the middle of the city.

Slater lost a lot of opportunities because of this, but otherwise acts well. He's played better roles yes, but it wasn't that serious. Reid really was a lot worse then. Dorff also does it properly, although his character remains very limited. Not a very special acting performance, but certainly not that bad.

In terms of atmosphere and structure, this film reminds me a lot of The Cave. Both movies have bad CGI, a dark setting and a lot of monsters that look the same. They were actually all large walking crocodiles. Alone in the Dark only has a bit more action and that unfortunately comes at the expense of the tension.

The film feels very clumsy and subtle it is far from. There is therefore no question of good tension, but when it comes to action it does have some decent moments. Certainly the big shooting in which even helicopters are allowed to make its appearance is quite nice. Also a lot of popping and sound and that actually works quite well.

The plot itself is especially the biggest inhibitor, because you can still look around the CGI. The story is just a bit too interesting and the mystery elements are not fascinating at all. The plot does try its own directions, but do they work? Not really. Furthermore, stylish decorations and cinematography. It's not even that bad, but it does have a B-feeling and a boring plot. Not a flop at all if you ask me.
