It took a while before my penny dropped, but from the moment the aspiring poet plunges head-on into the world of corrupt journalism, a fascinating film develops. Though inspired by Honoré de Balzac's mid-19th century novel of the same name, the theme is surprisingly timely in this age of fake news proliferation.

In retrospect, I thought it was a great film about class differences, integrity and manipulation with an excellent role by Benjamin Voisin. In addition, I find it a pleasure to see Cécile de France in action anyway, even if her contribution to this film is rather modest.

Lucien Chardon [Benjamin Voisin] decides to try his luck in Paris under his mother's more respectable family name De Rubempré. There he hopes to start a career as a respectable journalist, but when he befriends Etienne Lousteau [Vincente Lacoste], he soon discovers how much the printed press is ruled by big money. By adhering to the unwritten rules of (non-objective) journalism, he quickly works himself up. But his affair with Coralie [Salomé Dewaels], an aspiring actress of questionable reputation, leads him to his downfall in this fast-paced, lively and well-acted historical drama with a highly cynical take on so-called 'free journalism'. Based on Honoré Balzac's 1843 book of the same name, which bears many similarities to William Makepeache Thackeray's Barry Lyndon (1844).

It's not often that a costume drama really catches on. The favorite of Lanthimos was the real exception, I found the rest mediocre, just like this print. The disadvantage of this film is often also the long running time with hardly any sparkling elements. The decor, costumes and cinematography are often of a high standard, but from a story-technical point of view I was left hungry here too. Maybe also because I don't exactly have a high opinion of this Balzac...

Even then people knew the tricks of the trade in what I don't even call journalism. Writing positive reviews for a fee, well, the question can be asked who is the most pathetic party here. A lot of blah blah also from the voice-over that got boring after a while.

The movie couldn't hold my attention. I had already seen it after 2 parties and the endless chatter was no longer spent on me. So technically OK, content substandard. Unfortunately.
