Führer und Verführer plot

Joseph Goebbels, the NSDAP's Minister of Propaganda, accompanied Adolf Hitler during the seven years from the 'Anschluss' of Austria in March 1938 until the liberation of Berlin. While Hitler is at the height of his power, Goebbels is the creator of the images of the flag-waving crowds and of the anti-Semitic films 'Jud Süß' and 'Der Ewige Jude', which prepare the people for the mass murder of the Jews. After the defeat at Stalingrad and the situation becoming increasingly hopeless at the end of 1944, Goebbels plans his most radical act of propaganda; his final staging, with Hitler's suicide, the murder of his family and his own suicide in the Führerbunker in May 1945.

Lang attempts to connect the current propaganda war on social media to the way the Nazis did it by targeting Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels [Robert Stadlober] in the period from 1938 until his death on May 1, 1945. Why Lang devotes any time to Goebbels' affair with Czech actress Lida Baarova [Katia Fellin] and his bickering with his wife Magda [Franziska Weisz] is unclear. Perhaps he realized that the rest of the film would consist mainly of talk about the uses and effects of propaganda? Stadlober sounds like Goebbels, but makes him a lot more charismatic than he was. Fritz Karl impresses as perhaps the most human Adolf Hitler in film history, but this would have been a lot more interesting if Lang had focused on the use of propaganda in the period before the Nazis came to power. The number of previously unseen images can be counted on one hand, but this is a unique opportunity to (legally) see some images from Der Ewige Jude.

I agree with the opinions on this forum: the undertone of this film is quite explicitly political and at times even propagandistic, which is of course painfully ironic.

Yet this is not the biggest shortcoming. More decisive for the ultimately mediocre film is the acting: none of the actors really manage to get their role. Of course we are all somewhat prejudiced when it comes to Hitler performances. The brilliant Bruno Ganz set a standard with his Hitler that seems unmatchable, but the other Nazi leaders are also unconvincing.

Finally, and if possible even more disturbing, are the subtle but also decisive historical inaccuracies. During a dinner after the invasion of Poland (1939), for example, Hitler introduces his inner circle to the viewer. Mentioned are Himmler, Göring, ... The lesser-known Rudolf Hess, recently appointed by Hitler as his number 2 and as chairman of the war cabinet, is nowhere to be seen, while Albert Speer, at that time still "just" an architect and General Bau Inspektor, is depicted in traditional costume (military uniform with a band around his arm with the inscription Org. Todt) which points to his function as Minister of Armaments and later Minister of War, a function he would only take up three years later, after the death of his predecessor Fritz Todt.

These and other inaccuracies, together with the mediocre acting performances, make for a somewhat strange spectacle at times. The closest associates seem too much like a normal and fun-loving group of friends (while they could drink each other's blood) where you don't get any kind of fear reaction from any character.

Of course, this dispelling of the myth surrounding many of these figures is one of the messages of this film, although it's a shame that this is achieved through historical errors, bland portrayals, and the occasional hint of propaganda.

Good story by Theunissen. Good summary and an assessment I agree with. The film has received bad reviews, with the main complaint being that Goebbels and Hitler in this film do not resemble the original at all. The same was true for Ribbentrop and Himmler. For Hitler and Goebbels that is not surprising either. Only Bruno Ganz managed to come close to Hitler in 'Der Untergang'. The evil mouse face of Goebbels with his evil charm cannot be portrayed by anyone. Seen in this light, Robert Stadlober does not do badly at all. The person of Hitler is rather pale in this film in my opinion. Hitler looks rather 'normal' here and his rasping voice and notorious fits of rage are completely absent.
