Twin brothers Jared and Simon move with their mother and sister Mallory to their aunt's old mansion, Villa Spiderwick. There, the children soon discover a secret library, where they find a mysterious book. They are also introduced to a goblin who lives in the house and who makes life miserable for the children. I like a good adventure movie.
The film is magical and atmospheric.
Highmore shows that he is able to carry a film at a young age, although I found the double role a bit unnecessarily complicated.
The ending could have been a bit more creative, but all in all, great fun. *3.5

Not a very innovative film, this one that of course remains quite aimed at children. It's a book adaptation that I quickly find great that you can make into a film, but that's just my opinion. Nice to see Highmore by the way.
Highmore and Bolger therefore also do well as the 3 (yes, a double role) children. The rest acted a bit bland, Parker for example I didn't find too convincing and the trolls and monsters looked quite wooden and anything but believable.
In the end, a great film with some more exciting elements here and there. It's not great anywhere, but it does look pretty far away and the story does its best here and there to be original. If it had been a little better visually, it would have gotten a pass.

I just saw this movie by accident and I really liked it!
In the beginning I did indeed have to wrestle a bit from the childish content, but gradually I empathized more and more!
Nicely conceived (the book), nicely put together and certainly a nice mix of fantasy / family / adventure and a tad of emotion.
Even today a must for the whole family!
4 stars.
