Perfectly executed modern fairy tale.

Fairy tales are moralistic, predictable and full of clichés. Penelope is also a gourmand so whoever wants to burn the film down has enough ammunition.

The film doesn't worry about that either and tries to put down a modern fairy tale as well as possible without too much trepidation. Visually very beautiful and colorful, especially Penelope's room looks very nice. Also nice camera work that gives even classic scenes (when Penelope escapes and sees the city for the first time) a nice look.

Furthermore, there is enough humor in the film and the tone is consistently light-hearted. Real drama is shunned which I think was a smart move. I can't wait for a movie like this.

As far as I'm concerned, the picture was complete and the film easily gets away with the caption "modern fairy tale", which means that the otherwise so easy criticism does not apply to this film.

4.0*

Failed attempt at a modern fairy tale is not really suitable for the youth (in the first 5 minutes two people commit suicide and a journalist [Peter Dinklage] is beaten up and loses his eye) and also hits the shelf miss most of the other fronts. Penelope [Christina Ricci] may have a somewhat strange nose, but he is by no means so frightening that you jump out of the window from one high. Catherine O'Hara shines the most as Penelope's protective mother and Richard E Grant deserves a much better role. Only Dinklage scores a big pass as the journalist determined to get a photo of the mysterious Penelope. It's meager compensation, unfortunately.

You have to love the story, but that's with every movie you watch. I do like to watch the movie. The story between Penelope and Johnny is beautiful to watch. He's the only one who doesn't run from her and really likes her for herself. She's brave enough to live her own life and move away from home. Here she meets friends and sees that she is not so strange.
