Freaks Out plot
Matilde, Cencio, Fulvio and Mario work in the circus and are like family when World War II breaks out in Rome. The circus owner Israel looks for a way to leave the country together, but disappears from the scene. The four friends are left orphaned. Without a workplace, they lose their place in society. They roam like freaks in a war-torn city.

Just seen through IFFR. Special mix between war, fantasy, drama and there is room for humor. The starting point is the fantasy with the 5 'circus freaks', who in fact act as superheroes. Nazi Germany is not just the background of the story, but has a strong presence, including Jewish drama, bloody violence and a real battle. That of course creates the drama, which is also reflected in the bond between the freaks.
The latter is also the weaker part of the film for me; it's easy and cliche drama, and the story actually wafer thin. But it shouldn't be about that either. Visually it (mostly) looks beautiful, a nice premise and despite all the misery that comes along (and the length), the film remains and is sufficiently entertaining. There's easy superhero humor in it, but the little funnies were great, like the Adidas swastika sports jacket, the compulsively masturbating dwarf, and culminating in the swastika confetti; hilarious, and you just have to see it. Franz eventually started to have some maniacal Hans Landa traits.

Fantasy about eccentric circus performers who take on the Nazis as superheroes during the Holocaust. The humor, the drama and occasionally also the violence are generally (too) heavy. In the end I was left with ambivalent feelings.
