Field of Dreams has a remarkable story that you might get carried away with, but it certainly didn't happen to me.

The story is of course a kind of fairy tale, in which the American dream comes to the fore, but I found it unbelievable from the start. When Costner is addressed by the voice, I tended to laugh more than to be drawn by it.

That feeling stayed with me throughout the film. All that effort for a bunch of baseball players was beyond me. I thought it was too weak, too sentimental and, as I said, more laughable than beautiful or fun. It's nice that many people were sucked in by it, but I couldn't do much with it.

I believe this film is quite a classic in America, but here in the Netherlands you don't hear much about it. It makes sense, since baseball is truly an American sport. I was curious how such an absurd plot would develop. A farmer is instructed by a magical voice to build a baseball field in his cornfield, where the ghosts of deceased expelled players come to play. It's a bit difficult to get into, but every event has a sentimental charge, which makes for a fascinating story. I also liked the music in the movie.

Some of the dialogues and plot twists were unbelievable, a part where the parents are talking about LSD with their child, or the fact that Ray is going bankrupt because of the baseball field, when he clearly still has 50 acres left. Baseball still seems like an exciting sport to me, but it all means a bit less to me than the average American. A simple, beautiful film that is sometimes just a little too crazy, 3.5!

uber kitsch.

What a completely sentimental, dramedy movie this was. Has a kind of underdog classic status, but that is completely unjustified in my opinion. At times it even seemed like I was watching one of those corny religious dramas, even though the film isn't really explicitly religious.

Acting is really bad. Both Costner and Jones look like they've been called up for a cheap TV show. Audiovisually it is also really thick, with a soaring rock soundtrack and camera work that lacks all effect.

The whole baseball thing really didn't interest me and the fantastic element doesn't come into its own either. The kind of dad who has a calling, sees some dead stars and of course can make up with his dad in the end ... you just have to feel like it. Mno, this is a complete flawed product on all levels.
