I am not familiar with the book, but I have seen the film version from 1971. And although you should really rate each film on its own, you inadvertently start comparing the films with each other. And this comparison doesn't really work out positively for the 2005 film version.

The biggest asset of the new film is the development of the character Willy Wonka and the guest role of Christopher Lee as Wonka senior. I actually find Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka a pretty annoying man without any charisma. Quite a difference from how Gene Wilder portrayed the role. The acting of the rest of the cast is decent.

The chocolate factory itself is beautifully designed, but sometimes it is clearly computer work. The factory from the 1971 version was a little less bombastic, but it did feel a bit more real. The story is also quite strong and it is entertaining to see how the spoiled children get into trouble one by one. But again, the 1971 version...

Excellent (children's) film, which, however, is also enjoyable for adults, provided the correct mindset. As my upstairs neighbor says, looked through the eyes of a child, indeed. That dark edge of Burton is nevertheless present under the skin, (what happens to the children 1 by 1 for example). But generally very light in tone, and that's fine here. This film is mainly due to the beautiful visual style. That town in the snow at the beginning is atmospheric, but especially in the chocolate factory itself it becomes a colorful and creative feast. Some of the individual CGI was a bit ugly at times and it's all a bit too flashy at times, but overall it's absolutely beautiful to look at visually. Those songs were a bit too campy for me, by the way, but besides that everything that goes on in the factory is very entertaining. I personally found those Space Odyssey references laughable! Willy Wonka herself is also wonderfully portrayed by Johnny Depp. What a wonderfully strange character he is here again. He also carries the film, those annoying children you prefer to see turned into candy.

Nice Burton again, though you see even more than his hand, the hand of Roald Dahl, in just about every element that passes here. A bit of nostalgia though.

too bad I can't give less. What a bad remake. I just came off those flashbacks.
