Zwei Leben plot

"She built one life on love, the other on deceit"

Europe 1990, the Berlin wall just fell. Katrine, raised in East Germany and now living in Norway for 20 years, is a war child; the result of a love affair between a Norwegian woman and a German soldier during World War II. Katrine leads a happy family life with her mother, husband, daughter and granddaughter. When a lawyer asks her and her mother to testify in a trial against the Norwegian state, she firmly refuses. Gradually, however, the lawyer uncovers her hidden secrets more and more, until Katrine can't hide anything anymore.

Disconcerting story, in the aftermath of WWII, about GDR spies infiltrating Norway.

Strong film that also teaches us something about the Lebensborn children, another aspect of Nazi madness.

Extremely interesting piece of history, made poignant because it is set within a group of lucky people, many years after the end of the war, stepping into a truly dramatic, chaotic and painful family experience.

Very well built up, neatly using flashbacks, excellent performances and demanding attention to the end.

Watched with fascination and for those who want to delve even further into WWII and what followed, a must.

When an ambitious Norwegian lawyer Sven Solbach [Ken Duken] announces that he wants to sue the Norwegian state for collaborating with the Nazis, he contacts Ase Evensen [Live Ullmann], who had an affair during the war with a German soldier and the child had to give up to the Lebensborn program, which was designed to place illegitimate Aryan children with 'purebred families' in Germany. However, Ase's daughter Katrine [Juliane Köhler] takes steps behind her back to sabotage that investigation in order to keep a dark secret. Based on the book of the same name by Hannelore Hippe, who contributed to the screenplay. The first half hour may be a bit difficult to follow, but when it gradually becomes clear what Katrine's motives are, this changes from a family drama into an exciting thriller. Köhler's mannered interpretation is a minor blemish on a fascinating account of an underexposed, relevant chapter in 20th century European history.

We already knew that the Stasi was tough and ruthless from history lessons or a number of excellent films about that regime. This film is not inferior to that and is harrowing. When the bomb falls, the puzzle pieces fall into place. During the first part it was a bit of searching and guessing what it was all about.

An interesting, but hallucinatory story that originated with the Nazis, but was followed by the Stasi. Conspiracy theories and conspiracies that preferred to be covered up for the good of the empire. Fine acting indeed, good story structure and, despite the weighty theme, not corny or sentimental.
