Xiao Cai Feng plot

"A tailor-made love story."

China, 1970s. Luo and Ma, sons of intellectuals, are sent to a re-education camp in a remote mountain village during the Cultural Revolution. There they meet an old tailor and his beautiful granddaughter. Luo falls in love with the Little Tailor. She tells them that another young man is hiding under his bed a suitcase full of banned books by foreign authors. Luo and Ma steal the suitcase. In the evening they tell the stories they have read to the illiterate villagers. In order not to arouse suspicion, they douse each story with a revolutionary sauce. The Little Tailor is particularly impressed by Balzac's work. Slowly she realizes how important it is to be free: free to live, to think, to dream, to love.

Exceptionally nice love drama against the background of Mao's Cultural Revolution. The three protagonists deliver solid acting. The film is also richly larded with beautiful shots of the spectacular province of Hunan (which is NOT near Tibet). After much haggling, the film was shot in China, but never shown there because of the implicit criticism of the re-education program.

Poetic film with the harsh reality of the Mao regime as a backdrop.

"Natural people have feelings, civilized people also have ideas."

The first part of the film is a bit "difficult to get into" because of the immense cultural difference with our western world, but the second part is movingly beautiful.

I have only just seen this film, but I thought I would like it. Nothing spectacular and quite slow, but very well acted. I just relax with these kinds of beautiful films. I can have the same feeling in a museum when looking at a beautiful painting, that seems simple, but in which there is so much to see...
