Wuthering Heights plot

"I am torn with Desire . . tortured by hate!"

A stranger gets lost in a storm in inhospitable British swamps. By accident, he arrives at Wuthering Heights, the dark and gloomy mansion of the mysterious Heathcliff, a man so torn by unrequited love, he doesn't want to live anymore. As the storm rages outside, the stranger becomes increasingly intrigued by Heatchliff's sad tale. He harbored an innocent love for the beautiful Cathy, a wild and free young lady who was not bound by his love.

Wuthering Heights is a book I used to read for my book list of English. Although there are several film adaptations of the book, I have never seen one of them. So the film adaptation of William Wyler is kind of a reacquaintance for me. I must say, however, that the story seemed familiar to me only at times.

It is a story of love that cannot exist. A kind of beauty and the beast, but completely different. In any case, Laurence Olivier is a strong actor, who has often acted in these classic English stories. Here he also plays quite nicely, just like the rest, although the acting sometimes limps a bit towards the stage-like. The story itself is nicely worked out, although I found the dialogues at times not too strong and did not grab me as hoped. Here and there you notice at some points that it is all starting to get a bit dated. Despite the latter, the camera is technically strong, but you can also leave that to a professional like Wyler.

In summary, it's all nice. Wyler is too good a director to screw up something like this. However, compared to his other romantic films, this is the least I've seen of him so far.

A film that in 1939 was in the shadow of other classics that year: Wizard of Oz, Gone with the wind, Stagecoach and Mr. Smith goes to Washington. If no distinction had been made between color and black and white (Wuthering Heights won an Oscar for cinematography in black and white and Gone with the wind that in color), this film might not have won an award.

The film is a classic film adaptation and in that respect it has to lose out against some 'more modern' films such as Die Gone with the wind and Wizard of Oz. It is part of the genre and the book adaptation is certainly not bad. Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier disliked each other during filming. You don't notice that completely in the picture, but chemistry is not there either. David Niven is just a glorified extra here. By the way, Laurence Olivier's acting style and looks reminded me of Timothy Dalton. Surely he must have learned it from Olivier?

Nice film for those who like the old film style, but it is not a classic top film either. Beautiful images, that price for cinematography was not undeserved.

The still unparalleled second film adaptation of Emily Brontë's novel about the obsessive, tragic love affair between the spoiled Cathy [Merle Oberon] and groomsman Heathcliff [Laurence Olivier] is told through the loyal housekeeper [Flora Robson] who worked and lived at the estate Wuthering Heights. Nominated for 10 Oscars in Hollywood's Golden Year, but only cinematographer Gregg Toland managed to cash in on the nomination. Despite many subsequent film adaptations, Olivier and Oberon are still the ultimate personification of the tragic love duo and with an impressive supporting cast there is not a wrong note to be found. Direction, cinematography and music (by Alfred Newman) are perfectly matched in this unforgettable romantic drama. The scene in which Cathy tries to find her great love in the pouring rain is one of the highlights in film history.
