You know the kind of movies where the ending is too tacky and sentimental and that makes you think: “ah that's a shame”? That's how Wonder is from start to finish. 2 hours long. Undoubtedly, hordes of people love this (the ratings also prove it), but I myself am quite allergic to this kind of plastic Hollywood sentiment. It didn't hit me for a second.

The sweet approach of the source material will not appeal to everyone, but it must be said that this is a very skillfully made and above all beautifully played film, with many striking moments. The cast is top notch; it is mainly thanks to the enthusiastic play of everyone that this remains on track. The plot is otherwise very predictable, but the structure of the film has some surprises and everything is so catchy and fun that you will be dragged along unwillingly. Even the very intrusive music can't ruin that.

Another excellent film from director Chbosky. Wonder isn't exactly the most inventive title and maybe that's a bit of a shame. It's all a bit too much to put down August (Jacob Tremblay) as a "miracle". It really shouldn't have, although in this way it has become a strong feel-good film that absolutely does not approve of bullying. Still, I think in 9/10 cases this would turn out completely different and August would be completely ignored and bullied by guys like Julian.

People don't like abnormal behavior or things they don't understand. That is in our DNA and is also simply embedded in society. But if someone on the street addresses you with a face like August, you probably won't feel comfortable. This film does its best to break these taboos and you can only applaud that because these kinds of people deserve opportunities too. They are and remain human beings, even if they were born that way. Yet there is a nice nuance in the film because not all the world revolves around August and he should realize that himself. The story about the sister and her friend Miranda is very recognizable and also very well presented. The music was also beautiful at times. I like these kinds of movies, I think it's an achievement when movies can make you sentimental. Show this in the schools as this is well suited for educational purposes around bullying. 4*
