"Life is the most spectacular show on earth."
When Jacob Jankowski, recently sentenced to orphan and drifter, jumps on a passing train, he finds himself in the world of a second-rate circus trying to survive during the Great Depression. As a veterinary student nearing graduation, he is put in charge of the menagerie. There he meets Marlena, the beautiful star of the horse act who is married to August the animal tamer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who won't be trained...until Jacob finds a way to get through to her.

What a movie, just happened to see it on TV in Helsinki for the 2nd time. A really beautiful and original movie. Sweet or not, it will hit you!! Big 4 stars!!

Average indeed. I think Reese Witherspoon is a beautiful woman, but the romance has little chemistry that splashes off the screen. Furthermore, it is a fascinating story and a circus is always a nice environment. Just think of the fantastic recent musical The Greatest Showman. This one can't match this, but it does have its good moments. It's a beautiful life story about a man who loses everything and then by working hard and fighting back, he finds the love of his life. The sad thing is that the film reaches its peak pretty quickly and stays afterwards go on like a babbling brook.
Furthermore, a colorful film which is heartwarming in these colder days.

Coincidentally, I'm currently reading the book and the title of this movie at the thrift store immediately caught my eye. I wasn't sure if I wanted to see it now, since I already know how the story roughly continues in the book, but I was very curious and watched it yesterday. I think it's a fun movie that takes place in a colorful, cozy environment. I don't think the story is great, but it's doable and it's played well. It's not a film that moved or touched me enormously, but it didn't leave me cold either. I find it especially attractive and beautifully made. A 7. 3.5*
