From the years when Kurosawa focused on film noir or what he made of it with his films close to the style. In general, he certainly doesn't do that badly, although it sometimes feels a bit outdated. A feeling I also had with High and Low. You have to tell him that he can handle different genres nicely.

The Bad Sleep Well especially has a first fascinating part with the tension on the faces of the characters who feel cornered. You sense that something is in the air, but you don't know what yet. That is also exciting for the viewer, of course. Once you learn more, that atmosphere disappears somewhat. If you like Kurosawa's films from that time (there is a difference with the samurai films or his gems from the 80s), this is definitely recommended. He can easily compete with other Western names who made strong things in the fifties as far as film noir is concerned.

Curiously, I remembered this film as less impressive than High and low, but upon review after many years, it turns out to be an absolute masterpiece. It's nice how elements from Hamlet are used to tell a story whose theme is still relevant 360 years later, and undoubtedly still is 420 years later. Incredible performance by Toshiro Mifune, whose face is apparently expressionless but whose posture already shows iron determination to the good listener, and a beautiful supporting role by Katamari Fujiwara as Wada, whose face of a beaten dog tells the whole story. Nice that almost none of the users here have a problem with the length of the film, but hey, if you perform the entire Hamlet without denominations, you will soon be busy for 3½ to 4 hours, so then these 2½ hours. Impressive scenes in the office where Shirai is allowed to have a drink and in the bombed-out munitions factory, but the highlight is the scene that also serves as the cover photo for the Dutch DVD, when Shirai clutches his bag with bewildering contents against his chest in shock while Nishi watching him closely from behind his desk.

Seen in the excellent transfer from the British Film Institute, in the Kurosawa crime collection box; according to the cover, the film is 105 minutes long, but luckily it is on the DVD in the full 145-minute version. Buy that box! (Also includes Drunken angel, Stray dog and High and low.)

The film starts brilliantly with that scene at the wedding party where all the dolls are shown in a clever way. After that, however, the film is a bit messy for a while. only after an hour does the actual storyline around Mifune emerge and the film becomes stronger and continues to fascinate until the end. On a dramatic level (between Mifune and his wife) there are some beautiful moments and strong that the film chooses this ending, although it is rather unexpected and abruptso that the effect was not really there for me. So that's a downer.

Visually great by the way. Kurosawa is never trying to focus on the photography itself, but all images are so tightly arranged that every shot is a picture to behold. Very clever, with occasionally beautiful black and white (in that street with the road lit by lamps) and excellent use of the wide format. All in all, enough beautiful moments with unfortunately a long piece in the first hour that is not always convincing. 3.5*.
