Viceroy's House plot

"The end of an empire. The birth of two nations."

Viceroy's House in Delhi was the home of the British rulers of India. After 300 years, that rule will come to an end. For six months in 1947, Lord Mountbatten, grandson of Queen Victoria, held the post of the last Viceroy charged with returning India to his people. The story of the film unfolds within this large residence. Upstairs, Mountbatten lives with his wife and daughter; downstairs live their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. When the political elite - Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi - come to Viceroy's House to argue over the birth of independent India, conflict erupts. They decide to divide the country and a new Islamic homeland is created: Pakistan. It is a decision whose consequences reverberate to this day.

This film attempts to mix politics and romance. It doesn't really succeed. Historically, this is an interesting film about the division of property between India and Pakistan in 1947, and that in itself makes it worth watching. The shadow story about the love between a Hindu and a Muslim woman, however, comes across as somewhat forced.

This allegory for the violent conflict between the different population groups is much better expressed in the dramatic Pinjar: Beyond Boundaries... (2003) by director Chandra Prakash Dwivedi, a film that I can highly recommend.

A typical British film: very stiff, politically correct, honest but also somewhat inconspicuous. Could have been more considering the loaded subject but Chadla does not choose the intense moments in this intense story but looks for it in the nuance. The result is an intense talkie, certainly worth it, also because of the decent acting and the visible involvement and accuracy with which Viceroy's House was made. The Romeo and Juliet-like love affairs concerning the young couple of different origins, which runs like a red thread through the film (probably invented to give some color to the sometimes bland story), feels a bit uncomfortable and false, especially that forced happy ending is quite out of place.

Good insight into a piece of history of the British Empire. Heartbreaking to see how a population once peacefully stood up to each other. The umpteenth conflict on a religious level in world history. Bonneville and Anderson deliver a good performance as the Viceroy couple. The whole is provided with a love affair on the sidelines that also has an impact on both their lives. Ultimately, politics is the most important ingredient at the expense of.... Ghandi in his small role knows how to hit the core best. By the way, it is recommended to watch the film Ghandi immediately after this.
