Une Affaire de Femmes plot

The film is set during World War II in a small town in France. Marie (Isabelle Huppert) lives alone with her children because her husband (François Cluzet) is put to work. She performs abortions for big money and rents out a room in her house to a prostitute. She can afford all sorts of things and lives 'on the spot'. When suddenly her husband comes home, the atmosphere in the house changes completely. Her husband wants to love her, but she finds him insufferable. She seeks love from lovers and spends more time with friends than with her husband. He can hardly bear to be ignored.

Huppert is very good indeed in this film; Marie's increasing coldness and the emotions that sparsely break through it are especially impressive. The story is based on the life of Marie-Louise Giraud. Chabrol takes a lot of time to show how Marie becomes increasingly morally indifferent during the war years. The problems women face in times of war is the main theme. It remains that way towards the end, but Marie changes roles; she becomes a victim of profiteering. Because much less time is allocated to this last phase, this part of Une affaire de femmes remains a bit separate from the rest, and makes less of an impression than you might expect (the bitterly transformed Ave Maria as an exception, again thanks to a very strong Huppert).

Very fascinating film, not least because of the unusual events that occurred during WWII.

Sober this film with clever, simple dialogues and penetrating acting by Isabelle Huppert. François Cluzet and Marie Trintignant in one of her first roles, but long since deceased, also convince

A surprising, extreme and very dramatic ending is something that suits Chabrol.

Chabrol has a quantitatively large oeuvre, but I am a bit surprised that his work is hardly viewed. L'Enfer (Film, 1994) I thought it was his strongest film and it has in common with this film that it is difficult to label its main characters. fall. You can be for or against it, show pity or find it objectionable.

Here too, with Marie who enriches herself with illegal abortions and renting an upstairs room to a prostitute friend. The World War II setting is purely decorative. It might as well be a different time period.

Then you have Paul - who was the opposite of the Paul in L'Enfer - who takes everything very easily. He allows himself to be humiliated and does not have the strength to stand up to his wife. Until that one (and therefore last time).

That scene with that aunt and the remaining children of the deceased mother when they came to get the story was quite moving. Very strong performance from Huppert, but also from Cluzet, who I like to see in action.
