Typically American to want to mutilate the legend of Tristan and Isolde into a kind of Braveheart II. That's a shame and unnecessary, because the legend is dramatic enough, I think, to make it a nice love drama without all those sword fights, which have little to do with the original story.

Nevertheless, director Kevin Reynolds has turned it into an entertaining film with remarkable acting from James Franco, the lovely Sophia Myles and Bronagh Gallagher.

A few fine fight scenes cannot hide the fact that this Drama / Romance film is above all a complicated film about an impossible love in the Middle Ages.

After the Romans left the country, the Irish and English compete for the British Empire. The English heir to the throne Tristan (James Franco) sees his parents killed in battle and is wounded himself. He is secretly cared for by Isolde (Sophia Myles), the daughter of the Irish ruler. They don't know who they are, but they fall hopelessly in love.

Colorful and lavishly produced melodrama with spectacular fights, beautiful landscapes, intrigue and of course romance. James Franco and Sophia Myles are beautiful protagonists, but their acting is a bit flat and so is the drama.

All in all it was nice to have seen this Drama / Romance movie, but it could have been a bit more juicy.

More than fine love drama about the legend Tristan and Isolde.

What exactly the legend contains or is brought to the fore, I leave this one for what it is. Because Reynolds knows perfectly well how to make a not too heavy but fascinating and engaging love story with a number of perfectly cast actors and a number who are fine in their roles. I also find the setting in the battle between Ireland and England more than fine.

With the fights, Reynolds shows that he can handle knights who know each other well, Franco is super sober and solid, Myles is a feast for the eyes and men like Mullins and O'Hara are a perfect fit. Finally, to quote Anne Dudley's music, which fits perfectly into the semi-fairytale-like story.

Tristan and Isolde is a great evening of entertainment with the necessary action, drama and romance between two fascinating main characters and in my opinion a very pleasant film to do.
