What are boundaries?

Two Greek children run away from their mother to find their father, who is said to live in Germany and whom they never knew. During their journey they meet friendly and less friendly people.

Landscape in the Mist is the third part in the Silence trilogy by Theodoros Angelopoulos. It is a calm contemplative film reminiscent of the work of Andrei Tarkovsky. In the same way, Angelopoulos uses precise shots and smooth camera movements, in which it seems that the filmmaker has been able to completely control the environment to his will. What further enhances the calm character of the film are the long silences and the sounds of the landscape, occasionally interrupted by the music of Eleni Karaindrou.

In terms of content, the film reminded me a bit of Hector Malot's classic Alone in the World. Here too we see how two children make a moving journey that is not without setbacks. Angelopoulos also does something completely different. Where foundling Remi is looking for his real mother, the children in this film are looking for an unknown father whose existence is uncertain. Landscape in the Mist can be interpreted as a religious allegory. The father in this story represents God and the children's journey represents man's search for God. You could interpret the end of the film as that the children meet father/god in the form of a tree after their death.

In addition to the ending, the rape was also a very impressive scene. No shouting, no fighting, nothing visible on screen. But that is precisely why it is extra heartbreaking to see how the girl slowly crawls out of the truck.

Ultimately a strong contemplative road movie that leaves much open to interpretation.

A film with the necessary symbolism and tragedy. It is Theodoros Angelopoulos who does not tell a real story, but lets the images speak. It takes some getting used to, I'm usually not in favor of such symbolic films. But it's a fascinating film nonetheless. A film that takes its time, but can also be harsh. It doesn't overwhelm, but something still lingers.

A sad road movie about two young children who cross Greece in search of their father who lives in Germany. How they are going to find the man is a mystery to me, because they don't have much information. It seems like an escape to a better life, against my better judgment.

As can be assumed, the journey is not without dangers. Sympathetic less sympathetic (read: dangerous) individuals cross their path. The film is filmed minimalistically, the dialogues are also very sparse. It's not all that optimistic.

Freely accessible film too, straight forward. A film in which you can create a symbolism of the absent father, but that is absolutely not necessary. Good acting from the young children too. Fine!
