When Richard Maple (Michael Moriarty) marries Joan Barlow (Blythe Danner) in the late 1950s, they both think they have a great future. It stays that way for a while, until the two grow apart and the first extramarital affairs occur. Many ups and downs do not make it any easier. And after about 20 years, the lawsuit begins that will make both of them single again.
