Sombre family drama with many old acquaintances from other films by director Yasujirō Ozu. The film initially ripples along very quietly, but gradually you are completely sucked into the tragedy that the introverted family members inflict on themselves and their loved ones.

The film does not reach the high level of the films from Ozu's earlier "Noriko Trilogy", but comes close, not only in terms of content but also in terms of stylization.

Ozu is praised for being very good at conveying the sadness and joy of ordinary life and he does so in this film, but just like in Tôkyô Monogatari, which is considered the best film of all time, the mundane remains very mundane and the movie doesn't really grab me. The film does not get boring and partly because the film lasts so long you also start to sympathize with the characters and in this case also with the tragedy of Akiko. At the same time, the film keeps its distance, which can perhaps be seen as an improvement over the often sentimental and exaggeratedly 'heavy' Hollywood films, so that you – like the characters – are not really moved. The film is about the bond between parent and child and the pain of being abandoned and while the film is certainly well made it is not a film that will stay with me.

Although I can quite follow Ozu's mastery, his films do not inspire me enough. This minimalist cinema from everyday life makes it an extra challenge when it is drawn out for a long time and also makes the viewer make assumptions about what could have happened. Because certain subjects are avoided and are told with only scenes of what happens before and what happens after.

That being said, I certainly enjoyed Tokyo twilight to a certain extent. A film in line with the other productions I've already seen from him. Life as it is between families with all the tragedies, expectations and emotions that come with it. No sentiments, on the contrary. It makes it all feel a bit distant. Serenity and modesty are therefore central to many of Ozu's films.

Misery and fate are borne, especially by the father. A film with somewhat duller moments that tests the patience of the viewer, interspersed with striking scenes such as that of the train. Mixed success for me, but one I may need to review to fully appreciate or review.
