To the Wonder plot

Lovers Neil (Ben Affleck) and Marina (Olga Kurylenko) have retreated to a French island where they enjoy each other and try to put their unhappy past behind them. Neil thinks he has found the woman of his dreams with Marina, and promises her eternal fidelity. Two years later, when love fades, Neil meets his old flame Jane (Rachel McAdams). The two fall hopelessly in love and that puts Neil in a difficult position. Marina, meanwhile, doubts her love for Neil and asks priest Father Quintana (Javier Bardem) for advice. Father Quintana himself is in conflict with his beliefs, he no longer feels the devotion he had in the early days. Neil's conflict with the two women and Father Quintana's struggles with faith lead both to live with different forms of love.

Wonderfully beautiful.

We should not really expect a clear storyline from Terrence Malick. You will not get more than a grip. What do you get. A lot of feeling and emotions. Almost just that. The images speak for themselves. Malick and Lubezki turn it into something fantastic again. Beautiful, grand and compelling images. In addition, the sound is beautifully designed and the music choices are again brilliant. What is it really about? Love, pain, life, being human. Those are the first things that come to mind after seeing To the Wonder. The film is of unparalleled beauty and everything in the film really touched me. In any way whatsoever. The narration is again very poetic. There are some very nice lyrics in the voice-overs.

I fell in love with the dancing and jumping Kurylenko. I hated her at times. Her character goes through so many different changes. What a great performance from Kurylenko. Affleck shows a great game and McAdams also shows that she has more to offer. But it is mainly Kurylenko who steals the show here.

Another thing that steals the show here is of course the beautiful images. Lubezki lets himself go again. In combination with what Malick wants, this in turn creates visual fireworks. The locations are depicted in a very beautiful way. We float, as it were, with the characters. Sound is also very important in Malick's films. Really a beautiful sound design with so much to discover. The rustling grass, water, footsteps. Very nice. The music completes it all and helps in the emotional impact of certain moments.

Malick never makes it easy for the public. There is only one way to correctly judge a Malick film. Purely by feel. Either you can do something with it, or not at all. To the Wonder really seems like such a love it or hate it movie. I am in the first category.

Neil [Ben Affleck] loves the Marina [Olga Kurylenko], we know that much after a few minutes. But this is a Terrence Malick film, so there are endless hugs, lyrical imagery, romantic clichés and pompous wording to reinforce that feeling. It all turns out to be in vain when Neil's childhood sweetheart Jane [Rachel McAdams] shows up and the whole story starts all over again. Malick has very little to say but uses all the time and space to do so. He also adds to this mix a priest [Javier Bardem] who babbles endlessly about the faith and the uncertainties with which he struggles. There are people who run away with Malick. Neutral viewers will have very little fun with this, I suspect.
