After more than thirty years of teaching in London, Mark Thackeray is about to leave for Chicago to take a job there. There he also hopes to find the woman he fell in love with more than thirty years ago in Guyana. Once in Chicago, he is confronted by a class full of unruly, disrespectful and dangerous youth. However, Mark's love for the profession ensures that he instills self-respect and confidence in the young people, so that they do not give up hope for a better future. Meanwhile, one of his students discovers that his lost love still lives in Chicago and arranges a meeting between them.
