Fortunately, director Barry Levinson, whose career has been in the doldrums for a long time, still makes good films every now and then, especially when he is hired by HBO. The same can be said about Robert De Niro. Both are on a roll here, in this tragic true story of the downfall of businessman Bernie Madoff, guilty of the biggest financial fraud in American history. The script is well put together and the entire cast is impressive.

Boring.

The story could have produced something more exciting - enough material, and between the balloon popping in 2008 and the film being released in 2017, there was really enough time to think about it. But no. A boring lackluster mess, with a weak acting De Niro, a somewhat loitering and badly beaten up Pfeiffer. If I had been seduced by those two names on the poster, it might have given me a glimpse of the disappointment Madoff's customers have endured. Then it is slightly better in the supporting roles of Madoff's sons, but yes, those are supporting roles.

For a moment it seems that things are getting a bit cheesy - when ordering the lobster it becomes very clear what an unpleasant person Madoff may have been in practice. But no, after that we continue to babble on. Aggos, he's sorry. The biggest scammer ever.

Diana Henriques plays herself in this reconstruction of the last few months when hedge fund manager Bernie Madoff [Robert De Niro] was on the loose. Henriques spoke to Madoff just under two years after he turned himself in to the police for billion-dollar fraud. There are times when Levinson emphasizes that Madoff's clients were the real victims, but the screenplay focuses mainly on the consequences for Madoff's wife Ruth [Michelle Pfeiffer] and his sons Mark [Alessandro Nivola] and Andrew [Nathan Darrow], who opinion (wrongly) condemned against complicity. Although the term Pnzifraude is explained, as a viewer you are not flooded with jargon. It is a portrait of a complex person who seemingly refuses to accept that what he saw as protecting family inevitably led to its destruction. De Niro's minimalist rendition is sublime and Pfeiffer, Nivola and Darrow also deliver excellent work. What could have been dry fare comes out well thanks to the cast and Levinson's strong direction.
