The Weather in the Streets plot

Rollo is an aristocrat who is married to a sickly woman while having a love affair with divorced Olivia. They had once met at a ball at Rollo's mother's and kept a fond memory of it. When they later reunite, they begin a relationship that leads to pregnancy, Rollo's mother's intrigue and abortion, which was considered a serious crime in pre-World War II Puritan England, where the Victorian spirit reigns supreme.
