Impressive tour-de-force by Joanne Woodward, who, as far as I can judge, has rightly been rewarded with an Oscar. Woodward (Mrs. Paul Newman), who had previously done almost exclusively television work, pulls out all the stops and this is necessary to make the presence of three different personalities in one body plausible. It is her performance that makes this rather difficult film accessible, although the contribution of Lee J. Cobb as the psychiatrist should not be underestimated.

Good film about a woman who turns out to have multiple personalities. The writers of the film are the psychiatrists who diagnosed the woman on whom this film is based. The alternation between her sessions with the psychiatrist and how it affects her personal life is not going well. But this is made up for by the strong performance of Joanne Woodward (three for the price of one).

Dr. Luther (Lee J. Cobb) is a psychiatrist in Georgia and is faced with a special case. A woman named Eve White (Joan Woodward) possesses a split personality. Eve White is a timid type. A submissive housewife and obedient to her husband. Her alter ego with the imaginative name Eve Black is an extrovert going out type. An interesting and difficult case to cure reveals itself to Dr. Luther.

The adventures of Dr. Luther, Eve White and Eve Black make for an entertaining film. Although the issue is generally approached seriously, the film offers room for dryly funny and ridiculous situations that ensure that The Three Faces of Eve never feels overly dramatic. The film is also based on an authentic case. I kept wondering if the genesis and healing process of that authentic case were also sprinkled with comic incidents. I doubt it.

The film is a simplified representation of the original case and takes dramaturgical liberties. Thus, the real Eve possessed more personalities. The psychotraumatic reason for the emergence of her multiple personality was also much more complex than depicted in the film. Dr. Luther's therapy with confrontations and hypnosis has also been somewhat livened up for the film. Director and writer Nunnally Johnson is forgiven. The entertainment benefits.

Good acting from Lee J. Cobb in a sympathetic role. Fantastic acting by Joanne Woodward who, in accordance with the film title, plays no fewer than three characters during the course of the film. Johnson makes a good film that alternates melodrama with lightheartedness. Sometimes poignant, sometimes funny. It's just a shame that the viewer is once again saddled with such a typical artificially manufactured Hollywood ending at the end. Furthermore, The Three Faces of Eve is a great film.
