Story about legendary baseball player Lou Gehrig. The story begins with young Lou, who dreams of becoming a professional baseball player since he was a child. His parents, immigrants, force him to go to university to become an engineer. There he becomes a star player and with the help of a journalist he ends up with the famous New York Yankees.

This biopic about the American baseball legend and folk hero Lou Gehrig was showered with no fewer than 11 Oscar nominations (only one received). I do not rule out that the fact that the tragic death of the very amiable Gehrig was still fresh in the minds of many people played a role in this.
This does not alter the fact that director Sam Wood has made a gripping film about Gehrig's career. It is in every respect Gary Cooper's film, who delivers a brilliant performance. At the same time, though, Cooper is also kind of the problem. At over 40 years old, in my opinion he looks a bit too old to appear credible as a prospective university student.
The picture is completed by a once again extremely charming Teresa Wright, an actress who never really gave up; one of the very best from the 1940s.
A very beautiful film with high-quality acting. Highly recommended, even for people who don't like sports.
