A beautifully filmed, meticulously crafted production, but the attention to historical detail and beautiful pictures comes at the expense of the performances in this classic melodrama in which bacteriologist Walter Fane [Edward Norton] forces his brand-new wife Kitty [Naomi Watts] to accompany him to a cholera ravaged area in China. Wife has cheated on Charlie Townsend [Liev Schreiber] and Walter threatens to file for a divorce that would destroy Kitty's reputation. So she goes along, but the stay in politically unstable China has unexpected consequences for their relationship. Naomi Watts' somewhat mannered portrayal is less disturbing than Norton's apathetic acting. Also Liev Schreiber (ironically) makes a somewhat listless impression and the lack of chemistry between the protagonists is disastrous for a story that revolves around passion and desire. What remains are beautiful pictures, the Golden Globe awarded musical score by Alexander Desplat and good work by Toby Jones and Diana Rigg.

Lift not the painted veil which those who live call Life

A classic drama. And then a classic movie.

And that is not really meant in a positive way, because although it is all solid craftsmanship and such, it has also become a film that has little to surprise from start to finish, and stays between the lines much too well. Well, unlike the predecessors, you can see 'something' of the syndromes. Don't expect anything like the rinse room in Born on the 4th of July, it's all way too Victorian for that.

The images are quite beautiful, but also somewhat cliché, especially with the foggy shots of the somewhat too cliché Chinese landscapes. Being rowed on the river with an umbrella, as the poster indicates, although I really liked the somewhat steampunk watermill, and the stone bridge of course.

In the line-up, almost all male roles are unpleasant and unsympathetic - partly a priori by the actor himself, such as Norton, partly also because of the role that can be played, such as Schreiber. Then Watts has it a lot easier, he gradually gains sympathy. Even if it is on points. And then I must confess to my great shame that I didn't even realize who was playing the Mother Superior. ah.

With all that, it is certainly not a bad film, I must emphasize. Just not nearly as good as I expected. Quite disappointed with that. I just have a feeling that the book is really a lot better.

I honestly wasn't in the mood for romantic talk, but somehow I liked the movie. Maybe also because this isn't a romantic movie at all, no matter what the poster or the title suggests. Rather, the focus is on the problems that China faced during the interwar period.

A film that offers a look at the imperialist thinking of British rule and meddling. The Chinese made a serious effort on the side of the British during WWI, mainly behind the lines with the Chinese Labor Corps. After the war, nationalism gained more and more influence in China. Add to this the interesting plot of the cholera epidemic and the superstitious and traditional cultural values and it is only logical that mistrust between the British and the local population has only grown. It might be normal for the time, but those palanquins made me look uncomfortably at that colonial example of laziness.

In addition, beautiful images and well filmed in which the atmosphere and setting are well reflected. I'll be "in" the movie as they say. Entertaining to the end. The acting was decent, but I didn't find it exceptional. Watts and Norton have already put in better or more interesting roles.
