The true story of "The Mustangs," a team of five Mexican-American caddies in Texas who broke racial barriers to qualify to play in the 1957 Texas State Open Golf Championship. The focus is on JP Peña [Jay Hernandez], the school director who, with the help of friend and golf coach Frank Mitchell [Dennis Quaid], prepares five of his students technically, but especially mentally. The boys are reviled, both by the white elite of the local golf club and by the majority of Mexicans who think they are trying to be too American. From a cinematic point of view, golf is an undramatic sport and the story is quite hackneyed, but Quintana uses every means possible to strike a chord. And especially during the denouement, he comes a long way. There is also a nice supporting role for Cheech Marin (formerly of Cheech & Chong) as the groundskeeper who also shares a few wise life lessons.

Fairly colorless film about racism in South Texas, packaged as a sports drama. The message is clear, but I have the impression that little or no improvement has taken place since then (1950s).

Nice film about a group of Mexican-American boys who participate in a golf tournament. This sports drama about racism takes place in the golf world of the mid-1950s. An entertaining story, but a predictable and sometimes sentimental film. Well cast and well acted. All seen before, and therefore just under 3.5 stars.
