A little too good a movie to really hold your attention. Visually dull filmed, warmly acted but also with little jeu, and a story that you know that a twist is coming. It's that kind of movie all the time, with a cheater as the main character (wouldn't he be secretly cheated?) and a few separate moments in between that you can't place right away except that you know that this is not for nothing so emphatic. I also didn't think the final punchline was very exciting and the whole thing felt a bit like loose sand. It's not all that bad, but that's about it. 2.5*.

The Good Liar had some elements to be a very good movie. The acting is fine and some scenes immediately reveal that there is more going on here than "someone is being cheated". As a result, I remained fascinated for a long time to watch the denouement of this story.

And that's where it all comes crashing down. Enough has already been said here that the twist is predictable and in itself didn't bother me. But the plot happens through elements that you could not have detected anywhere in the story and that makes it feel a bit like a deus ex machina ending, a deception towards the prying viewer. A mortal sin against basic story technique. As a result, the whole unfortunately falls to the mediocre and I give 3 * for this missed opportunity.

This starts out as a romantic comedy-thriller of sorts with McKellen as the charming con man and Mirren as the rich widow who is no doubt not as innocent as she pretends to be (otherwise there would be no twist and therefore no plot). After the nice trick with the fake investment with the "Russians" and the "police", the film takes an unexpected dark turn with a few fairly violent scenes and the full or partial revelation of Roy's past, and that puts the plot on edge, because although I thought I knew how the movie would end when they sign Vincent (not Roy but Betty is going to loot the bill.. ... or does Vincent do that?) I was curious if the film still had a real ultimate twist in store. And it came, but surprisingly it pulled the whole thing down, because the explanation took way too long and the double coda (Vincent at Roy, Betty worried about her granddaughter) just came after the meal. Too bad that the film stumbled so much in sight of the finish line, and too bad about the excellent performances of the two protagonists.
