The Fall of the Roman Empire plot

"Never before a spectacle like the fall of the Roman empire"

Sensing that he will soon die, Emperor Marcus Aurelius decides to disinherit his cruel son Commodus and instead appoint his general Livy, who is also Commodus' half-brother, as successor. Fearing for their jobs in Livy's envisioned peaceful politics, a number of officers hatch a plan to assassinate the Emperor before he can officially ratify his will.

The three hours fly by and that is quite a lot for a film of that length. The film does not really tell the end of the Roman Empire (in 476 according to the books) but the beginning of the end of the empire, some two hundred years earlier, after which it gradually crumbled. Marcus Aurelius was a peaceful "Caesar" who was able to maintain a unity of the great empire through the policy of give and take. However, when his son Commodus succeeded him (which was not really the intention, you will see), he unfortunately accelerated the fall of the ancient civilization.

Plummer in particular was masterful in his role as Commodus; how I enjoyed his acting! He couldn't stay on the screen long enough. Also the somewhat forgotten Stephen Boyd (Messala from Ben-Hur) as general Livius is quite good as the man on whom the fate of Rome depends. Sophia Loren is also not bad as the sister of Commodus and lover of Livius; despite some comments that she adds nothing, I think she adds the most to the whole in the sense that quite a few events in the film are driven by Livius' love for her.

And then those sets. Truly breathtaking! I read that the Roman Forum was the largest built set in film history to date. And you can see that. No expense or effort was spared. This epic was not a success at the time, but I do hold it in high regard.

Excellent film in which the emperor of the Roman Empire would rather not see his son as successor. A grand historical spectacle film: the many mass scenes, the sets, the costumes and the music. Apart from that, the story about the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire is compelling enough. Of the cast, Christopher Plummer plays his role best.

The first hour (!) was really a bit too lame, but from the location Rome the film starts to take shape. Those typical theatrical dialogues from that time always lend themselves well to the description of the historical context, in this case the end of the Pax Romana with still current relevance.

However, the running time remains too long and the scenario is sometimes a bit messy, even though the film manages to continuously convey the grim atmosphere of decay in the background.

Some of the all-star cast seemed a little out of place at times, but not Plummer, who delivers a fine performance.
