Beautiful film, which gradually swings back and forth between the light-hearted and the heavy. You sit with a lump in your throat, a minute later Payne gives you a smile again.

The sublime acting, with Shailene Woodley as the real star, and the simplicity make the film lifelike. A film that you not only see, but also feel.

Recommended, in my opinion unique in its kind.

This is now my third Payne and I really liked this one too. Payne always succeeds in making warm human films. They are often light-hearted films with a touch of drama seasoned with a layer of subtle humor. Films in which you can recognize yourself because the characters have many talents just like yourself, but also flaws in which falling, getting up and getting back together are part of life. Matt King sums it up well in the opening credits: Hawaii may seem like paradise on earth to many, but that paradise does not escape the things of life such as cancer, divorce and other doomsday scenarios...

And trial and error, Matt King does. His seemingly perfect life falls like a house of cards when his wife has a boating accident and is in a coma. He is confronted with the facts, because raising his children as a "stand-in father" could also be broader than initially thought. In addition, he remains in doubt about the sale of a piece of land with a mob of cousins sitting on his skin. The story also becomes more complex when it turns out that his wife was cheating on him.

That is also the beauty of these 'The Descendants', the mixed up feelings that are created by the emotional events. How should you respond to someone who cheated on you? How should you react if someone destroyed your family life, indicating Julie Speer? Nothing but good about the dead, the motto of Elizabeth's father? Or occasionally swearing in church, preferably when no one hears (Matt King)?

I've already seen a good George Clooney, better than expected. The movie star becomes an actor. And Shailene Woodley was also allowed to be seen, literally and figuratively. The Descendants is a moving film. The ending illustrates that once again: tender, intense and above all ... fuck it up!

This film doesn't do much wrong, but it didn't touch me and often couldn't keep my attention. Strange, because somehow this is up my alley, but Payne didn't like me before. Acting is fine (I always like Clooney), great locations, nice atmosphere, such a nice slice of life instead of a story from A to Z, and a nice rippling tempo. But as said, the film never fails to captivate. 3.0*.
