Strong ending to a beautiful career, this the Dead by John Huston. Since the script was written by his son and his daughter plays a major role, you can almost speak of a true family happening.

The Dead is very simple in design, but the execution is very strong. The dialogues in particular, which are numerous, are very strong in terms of content. The acting is very natural and good and although sometimes there is not always as much happening, it is almost constantly fascinating.

It is also clear that Huston felt his end was fast approaching. Death is also incorporated into the whole in a subtle, but also oh so clear way. The best part is that I have never really enjoyed old singing ladies, but here it turned out quite well, I must say.

4.0* thick

John Huston ended his impressive career with a melancholic, soberly directed film adaptation of 'The Dubliners' written by James Joyce. Huston has never hidden his love for the land of his ancestors, but this bittersweet story of a number of family members and friends coming together to celebrate Christmas in 1904 also shows that part of the good old Ireland of that time no longer exists. This is partly due to the increasing divisions between loyalists and republicans that would lead to the infamous 'Easter Rising' 12 years later and marked the beginning of 'The Troubles' that continue to divide Ireland more than 100 years later. On the other hand, the world was already changing considerably due to increased mobility. Flawlessly acted, thoughtfully directed and beautifully photographed.

He who delivered so many action and adventure films, says goodbye here with an ode to the Ireland of "those were the days..., where the cradle of his ancestors stood.

John Huston's latest is a remarkable film about the close-knit family life that loves traditions, honors singing and recitation and values and puts friendship first.

The film, which has no movie stars in the cast except for daughter Anjelica, shines through its simple approach, the atmospheric portrayal of such family gatherings, the clever dialogues, the nostalgia that oozes and, above all, the extremely well-crafted performances.

Not representative of the filmmaker's entire oeuvre and that is precisely why it is so remarkable.

Take it easy and enjoy it.
