As Hurricane Katrina rages on New Orleans, the elderly Daisy is on her deathbed. She asks her daughter to read from an old diary. The diary tells the special story of Benjamin Button. Benjamin is born an elderly man, and then grows younger by the day. Halfway through their lives, Daisy and Benjamin fall in love. But what will the future hold as Benjamin grows younger and Daisy grows older?

Excellent film about a baby who is born old and gets younger and younger. An original and beautiful story that is told here in a compelling way. The story spans several decades, but as a film it remains one whole. It all looks beautiful and the make-up/special effects are convincingly done. Two beautiful roles from Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.

Take a short story of about 20 pages, with one original gimmick. Then we stretch this into a film of almost three hours, which apart from the romance that turns out to be doomed does almost nothing with that gimmick. For the rest, every part of the film could also have taken place with someone who does grow old in the normal way; besides, the film doesn't have a lot of common thread.
I have always ignored this film, mainly on gut feeling; although it was by David Fincher, who generally has a very fine oeuvre, this didn't appeal to me at all. And I'm afraid I've been confirmed in my prejudice, this film turned out to be quite a failure. Of course, there are some nice scenes, the cast is not bad (but really not great), but there is still a lot to criticize. Why on earth does this have to take three hours? Except on the romantic level where Daisy does age, what is the added value of Benjamin's reverse aging? Why isn't there something interesting about being young in an elderly body and vice versa, except for predictable jokes about, say, an old man who doesn't understand sex jokes? And why is there so little line in the story? It's not that the individual scenes are so exciting (Brad Pitt adopted, Brad Pitt on the high seas, Brad Pitt in the navy, Brad Pitt backpacking in India) or that the romance with Cate Blanchett is well splashes off the screen. I really don't see the point of this movie.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a film with an original story and with a voice-over you can easily sit the playing time because the setting and decors are just beautiful. My doubts came from Brad Pitt but somehow it still manages to fit here.
