Impressive movie.

The crazy thing about this film is that it doesn't avoid the clichés, especially towards the end. In fact, you as a viewer are thrown flat with it. Where I normally get annoyed by clichés, I could now easily find myself in them and I was not annoyed for a second by certain plot lines.

I think it's mainly because Jake Gyllenhaal along with the rest of the cast deliver a believable performance. Not only is Gyllenhaal physically impressive, but the character he portrays has a believable story and I, as a viewer, sympathized with him greatly.

The fights in the ring are also superbly portrayed. Not only quite an achievement by Gyllenhaal, but the camera work also contributes in a positive way.

There are many flaws in this film, but because the film captivated me from start to finish, I turn a blind eye.

Recommended. 4*

Reasonable movie.

Jake Gyllenhaal excels as an unsympathetic loser who by his behavior loses his wife and daughter and then Rocky-wise overcomes himself and a hateful adversary . Southpaw is based on a tried and tested recipe and can add little to the genre. Antoine Fuqua occasionally puts some trendy things in his direction, but has already made better films. Southpaw is not bad but ultimately little more than gray mediocrity.

I have seen Gyllenhaal in many different roles, and what a great actor he is. The rest of the cast also does a good job.
But the film itself is not much more than that. The chewed-up story of a superstar who really loses everything. In other words, misery upon misery upon misery upon misery. After hitting the bottom of the pit, he tries to pick up the thread again, and is confronted with even more misery. And in the end he still wins. And the scenario doesn't even bother to add even 1 original aspect to this beaten track. We have been able to see everything that Southpaw shows many times before. The most irritating example is the incredibly unbelievable boxing matches in which boxers take 20 blows in a row with their head without any problems.

What speaks for Southpaw is that most scenes are nice to the point and short, so that it runs smoothly. That, and Gyllenhaal will get me a pass.
