Not a bad post-war film, which somewhat captures the imagination due to its adventurousness.
I had to bite through the first fifteen minutes because I almost turned it off by then, so weakly directed.

Once in the camp things get a bit more interesting.
Don't expect high-quality cinematography or acting here, just a decent plot-drive film.

I've seen quite a few war films but this is one of the best. A film that has a strong impact with a very good acting performance by Bernhard Bettermann. The film is 2.5 hours long, but it flies by. I love survival films and this is a great example of that. If I had not watched the documentary of The Greatest Story Never Told about Hitler and then googled the name of Cornelius Rost, I might never have discovered this gem. You can also see here on Moviemeter that this is in fact a forgotten film. Yet a very beautiful one that even managed to bring a tear to my eye at the end. What a strong person.

Not bad at all but I agree with what some say; the Germans put themselves in the role of victim... I actually didn't feel that much pity for Oberleutnant Forrell, so in terms of empathy I was disappointed. The "Wir haben es nicht gewusst" excuse seems a bit lame at the end, when the Jew helps him. The skewed point of view undermines the credibility of a beautifully designed adventure film in "Fugitive" mode. Beautiful sets, adventurous moments and a very long flight home for Forrell that takes him from the Siberian gulag to exotic Persia. Although the film has many similarities with the much better The Way Back (2010) (4*), the source material is not the same and Peter Weir's film is certainly not a remake. Please note: the sentimental ending is so cringeworthy that I could hardly get it straight.
