Very nice film with a nice story, a bit of Lord of War in an old guise.

Bogart is playing very well again.

3.5 stars

I knew in advance that this is considered a lesser film in the Bogart oeuvre. Nevertheless, or precisely because of that, I still enjoyed this grim war film in which cynicism reigns supreme, not least because of the character that Bogart portrays. Arms trafficking, fencing, human smuggling; you name it. The end of the film is therefore a logical consequence of the application of the Hays Code that was still applicable at that time.

Unfortunately, current events in Syria give this film an extra tragic dimension.

Although this film does not belong to the classical canon, there is plenty to enjoy for film lovers. If only for the beautiful black and white photography in the labyrinthine sets. The credits for this go to Burnett Guffey, who would win Oscars in later years for his work in From Here To Eternity (1953) and Bonnie And Clyde (1967). It's nice that quality always comes to the fore.

Humphrey Bogart himself was not particularly pleased with this slightly too flashy pseudo-remake of Casablanca, made by his own production company. Bogart plays the role of arms smuggler Harry Smith who, from Damascus, profits from the rebel struggle against the French authorities. His lucrative business is jeopardized when Colonel Feroud [Lee J Cobb] starts investigating the case and soon finds out what's going on. Harry makes things even more difficult for himself when he sets his sights on Feroud's mistress Violette [Marta Toren].

Given the current political relations in Syria, you could easily place the story - and the situations - in today's Damascus. The renewed topicality of this theme gives this film renewed relevance. Bogart is decent, Cobb is fine and with Everett Sloane and Zero Mostel the supporting roles are also quite well cast. But the biggest problem with this Casablanca clone is the weak performance of Toren who lacks enough charisma and authority to give her key role the weight it needs.
