Shotgun Stories plot

"Two families. One feud. No going back."

Son Hayes never mentions the scars on his back. The shotgun bullets under his skin form a blue-black cartridge. His colleagues speculate about how he got them. Boy and Kid Hayes, his brothers, are just talking about it too. The past, like the scar, continues to haunt him. They had a bad childhood. Their always drunk father thought more of himself than of the rest of the family. When the latter left the family at some point, he improved his life and became a successful man. He remarried and gave birth to new sons. At Father Hayes' funeral, an argument breaks out between the two groups of sons.

The dialogue is not particularly strong at decisive moments, the pace is a bit too slow, and it lacks a bit more emotional charge, but otherwise it is well directed visually and atmospherically. This drama with almost biblical characteristics is set in a shabby village in Arkansas. Two families of half-brothers are at loggerheads. The central figure of all this misery has just passed away: their father. But that doesn't solve anything. Hate leads nowhere except to your own destruction when you give in to it. The question is how this movie will end.

I dug up this film after a request for films about brotherly hatred and conflict, and this fits in quite well, although these are half-brothers and the family connection is not particularly strong. I always think a decent debut by indie director Jeff Nichols and Michael Shannon is a great choice to star.
