When he and Rosy fall in love, the latter is slowly ostracized from the community.

Beautiful romantic film against the background of the Irish resistance against British rule during the First World War. Director David Lean is a natural storyteller and takes his time as always (more than 3 hours), but I was not bored for a minute. Strong characterizations and beautiful cinematography. Especially the shots of the storm are very beautiful.

One of director David Lean's lesser films, but given his impressive oeuvre that only means that this is simply good, but not great. The epic approach to the relatively simple story does not work equally well everywhere. Certain moments are too exaggerated and overdone. Fortunately, the acting is mostly fine and visually the film is still particularly overwhelming. The vast Irish landscapes burst from the screen, with an incredible eye for detail. And what beautiful lighting. Especially the climactic storm, with towering waves crashing against the coast, is unforgettable. The penultimate film by Lean, who would not make his last film until fourteen years after this 'flop'.

Classic Sunday brought Ryan's Daughter this time, a film I picked up last year at a thrift store that often has classics and other rarities. I didn't know the title but I didn't dare risk leaving it there. Last night I finally started the film, quite early in that respect because of its considerable playing time, in an attempt to be surprised.

Great, Irish and what a beautiful environment. It must be said that this release on dvd is of good quality and a plus for nature and environment. It appears that practically everything was shot on location in Ireland. The village where everything takes place is also beautiful. Although the First World War seems far away, there are already the thorns between the Irish population and the English occupation and control. Something that does not get better during the film and a number of events. The story is certainly beautiful with all the tensions and actions that follow.

The considerable length is a pity for a story that could have been an hour shorter. The film with its three hours and fifteen minutes can almost be called tempoless and that is a pity. Some things really take far too much time and sometimes hardly anything happens. Then there is the truly remarkable choice of music that sounds suspiciously like marching music and does not fit the tension and sometimes nasty events at all.

Ryan's Daughter deserves a barely pass mark in my opinion for the effort and especially the landscapes are almost a reason to watch it, but apart from that it wasn't for me.
