Roadracers plot

"Fast cars. Fast girls. Fast living."

Dude Delaney is a typical 'rebel without a cause' in 1950s America. He wants to get out of his dull hometown as quickly as possible. Especially because he has had enough of the corrupt police officers who keep calling him and the annoying young people who harass him because he has a Mexican girlfriend. When he joins a band, and they get a shot at a record deal, he realizes that this is the opportunity to escape the town.

I think this was the first Robert Rodriguez film I saw. Don't know him yet.

I already know Salma Hayek and she gradually became popular with me and has since become one of my favorite actresses.

I didn't know there was a Dutch DVD edition of this, I'll look for that sometime. I remember this as a cool movie with a pretty strong style. The 50's atmosphere is brilliant and the music is nice to hear. The racing scenes also make this a pretty entertaining and cool movie. Rodriguez is off to a very good start with his second film in his career. So this gets a 4.0 from me.

Not bad for a quickly and cheaply made TV movie. Beginning is still questionable. The humor there isn't really for me, although it is clumsy enough not to really be an obstacle. Rodriguez is also a bit excessive with his rock 'n' roll, but the energetic editing stands out and David Arquette is not a bad chain-smoking greaseball.

Halfway through, without really having a plot worth mentioning, it is quite up to speed and in the closing part, where Rodriguez puts an end to the idyllic 1950s, things slow down a bit. Kevin McCarthy's cameo is great, The Ramblers get what they deserve and the confrontation between the two fighters is surprisingly solid.

This early television film by director Robert Rodriguez shows his energetic qualities before he later focused more on blockbuster films. The entire design in terms of content and visuals is exaggerated to such an extent that it is very entertaining to watch, even though the dark finale falls considerably outside the light-hearted tone. The humor in particular comes through well, especially because the cast members clearly had fun and provided their characters with enough eccentric qualities. This film does not want to evoke a truly lasting feeling, but it has enough highlights to at least offer a smooth viewing experience.
