Retablo plot
Segundo Paucar, a 14-year-old boy, wants to become like his father and continue the family tradition. His father is a professional maker of so-called retablos; handcrafted cabinets with miniature dolls depicting folk art, showing historical or religious scenes. On his way to a community celebration in the Andes, Segundo accidentally observes his father in a situation that destroys his entire world. Trapped in a chauvinistic environment, Segundo silently tries to deal with everything that happens to him.

So many beautiful, bright and cheerful colors in this film, but behind it lies a nasty story about big secrets, homophobia and everything that goes with it. It touched me. It really hit home and I wanted to know what happened next all the time. I think the acting is very good and realistic, and I think the effect is beautifully small and subdued. The retablos add even more beauty and artistry to this film. What beautiful, artisanal works of art. A strong film. 4*

A film the way I like to see it with a touch of culture and craft. A man who wants to pass on his talent to his 14-year-old son with love and care. Small miniature figurines are created with great precision and dedication, one more colorful than the other. Lively, cheerful and colorful.
It is in stark contrast to the secret or feelings the father is dealing with. Not remarkable, but rather confirming to note that these small world cinemas always deliver good authentic films with a great sense of realism and the small or large concerns of the everyday life of an average family. That is no different here.
Loyalty and love emerge and opinions differ between mother and son. A subdued film that makes you pause and think that Western liberal views are not so widely supported globally, which does not alter the fact that treating people as pariahs because they are different should not be condemned.
