The film certainly starts off promisingly with a premise of two sisters who are reunited after the death of their parents. But the story contains too many implausibilities for me to be good. I always try to watch older films with the eyes of the time, but that doesn't help in this case either. After Denise attempts suicide because of the rape, her sister Thérèse wants to force the rapist to marry Denise. I find that a really problematic and unbelievable thing. Also how the barely saved and traumatized Denise goes along with it as if everything is fine. No, I don't believe that. Thérèse is far too masochistic in her attitude for me, even though she comes from a convent. And then there's the ending in which Max ends up under a train in a very clumsy way and dies. Unbelievable.

However, this film by Melville was a commercial success that allowed him to further develop his independent cinema. This Quand Tu Liras Cette Lettre was not a self-written film but had a screenplay by Jacques Deval.

What makes the film worth watching is the visual aspect. The scene between Max and Thérèse at the sea in backlight is very beautiful and fitting for example. The setting of the fashionable Cannes contributes to the sultry atmosphere that is also supported by a side plot (seducing the rich lady) that I find more interesting than the main plot.
