Piccadilly plot
Mabel is the star of the Piccadilly Club and in love with the club's boss, Valentine Wilmot. When the income decreases, Valentine accidentally discovers that Shosho, who washes the dishes there, can dance well and he is immediately away from her, much to Mabel's chagrin. But Shosho is shot dead and in a lawsuit it must be clear who the perpetrator was.

London's nightlife is presented using color filters: blue for the darkness outside; sepia for indoors; purple for the oriental dance. We see a decadent club with character dancers. The opulent interior with a large, ornate staircase is art deco. Shadows are used to accentuate eyes or to give a woman a fake mustache. Moving reflections keep the momentum going. Chinese artifacts include the pipa (lute) and the good luck charm which ironically will bring bad luck.
Anna Mae Wong was the first Chinese-American to have a leading role. She charms with sensual movements and looks. Her hair is short, following the fashion of the flappers of the crazy 1920s. In the beginning she wears the vulgar clothes of a kitchen maid, while her co-star wears jewelry. A turning point is when she gets that expensive dress, which arouses the jealousy of her rival. Racism is being denounced, which was far from self-evident in 1929.
The climax is the confrontation between the two romantic rivals. The truth comes to light in two flashbacks during the court testimony. It is an exciting, mysterious whole with expressive acting and visual delights.
