Paper Moon plot

"These aren't everyday people and this is no ordinary movie."

The America of the Depression, 1936. Moses Pray attends the funeral of one of his girlfriends. The deceased's neighbors ask him to take 9-year-old daughter Addie to Missouri, where her aunt lives. The girl does not fit in at all with the plans of Moses, who makes a living as a swindler. Finally, Moses gives in to the pressure and leaves for Missouri with Addie. On the way to Addie's family, Moses has his hands full with the nine-year-old girl: she smokes, swears, and is even more manipulative and cunning than he is. They decide to pool their talents as swindlers.

The film was continued in 1974 as a TV series with one of the greatest talents in female film history: the then 11-year-old Jodie Foster as Addie Pray. In my opinion, La Foster was much better in the series than the certainly not bad Tatum O'Neal who won an Oscar with it. Recommended...

Excellent film about a man and a child who scam as many people as possible along the way. This charming road movie is set during the Great Depression. More than enough entertaining scenes where the young Tatum O'Neal steals the show. The interaction between her and Ryan O'Neal (her father in real life) also comes out well.

I had always missed this movie until now. Peter Bogdanovich had previously made the beautiful The Last Picture Show, one of my all-time faves. This one is a bit lighter in tone. A kind of slightly comic road movie with beautiful camera work here too. Ryan O'Neal and 9-year-old Tatum O'Neal as a kind of alternative Bonnie and Clyde in the American crisis years. Without guns, but with canvassing and exchange tricks.
