Osama plot

"To save her family a girl must become a boy"

A 12-year-old girl, her mother and her grandmother have survived suppressed demonstrations started by Afghan women against the Taliban regime. Because her husband and brother are both deceased, there is no one who can provide for the livelihood of the family. The girl's grandmother decides to change the girl's appearance so that she looks like a boy. One day, however, all the boys from the town, including the girl in disguise, are taken to a religious school, Madrassa, which is also the camp where Taliban soldiers are trained.

I found the film really radical because of the accompanying documentary/making of on the DVD.

Isn't the lead actress actually being abused by the director's self-centeredness?!

Wonder how much consideration he had for her. Very sad. What happened to her? #dtv

Despite the rather meager storyline, the haunting, authentic images ensure that this film stays with you for quite some time. No documentary about Kabul can compete with that. I think this film was made under very difficult circumstances. Hats off.

Unfortunately a very topical theme these last days/weeks. With the advance of the Taliban, these hard times may be returning for the Afghan people. Poignant portrait of the social inequality of women within the regime and where vices are heavily publicly sanctioned. The latter is briefly discussed towards the end, but is not portrayed.

In that respect an ideal "school film" in which inequality, discrimination and the harsh existence of women come to the fore, but where violence and blood in front of the camera are somewhat avoided. As a result, the film lacks some body to really catch on.

Yet the atmosphere is very grim and rough. Famine, pedophile forced marriage, indoctrination, neighborhoods destroyed, etc ... it is not a pretty picture and makes you think.
