Pretty nice for a Dutch movie! I once read the play and I kind of knew how it went, and the film adaptation has not disappointed me at all. I don't think many things have changed substantially - only adding the song Danny de Munk sees wouldn't have been necessary in my opinion. Dutch actors don't always excel, but I thought the most important roles were well done here. Renée Soutendijk and Kitty Courbois are especially strong. The biggest disadvantage is the disadvantage of all Dutch films: the text is often so difficult to understand. I don't know what it is - maybe the Dutch can't articulate? - but I generally find it easier to understand English than Dutch. A little disapointing. Most important, though, is the story, and that's exactly as it should be. Three stars.

More than thirty years after the first viewing, I recently saw it again and have to say that I thought it was better than at the time and I actually gave it half a star. Was a film in the eighties that was announced with much fanfare, especially because young star De Munk had a leading role again after Ciske de Rat. Added to the classic story and the announcement by producer Van Heijningen that this was going to be a very expensive production, this resulted in high expectations, which were not fully met. In terms of decoration, it looks fantastic, Pieter's direction is nice and direct and to the point, Courbois (as a little knee) and De Gooyer portray wonderfully questionable characters, and the music by Rogier van Otterloo is also beautiful and appropriate. Downsides are the forced lead role of De Munk, the terrible stylistic mistake to have him sing a song several times and of course that what should be the dramatic climax (the sinking of the ship), is unraveled in barely a few minutes. But all in all, a positive feeling dominated me, the traditional Dutch basic story is solid and was not perfect, but a solid adaptation.
