Oldboy

Reasonable remake. The film is a bit more accessible and straight forward than the South Korean original, and that has its pros and cons. Story-wise, it's all well put together and Spike Lee's direction isn't special, but with a number of impressive and absurd scenes, he does leave his mark on the material.

Brolin is impressive in the lead role and Elizabeth Olsen also knows how to get the most out of a somewhat thankless role. Copley and Jackson do disappoint. The twist is brought back well, but the intensity of the original is nowhere approached. Neither is the atmosphere. Oldboy is a solid remake that never really disappoints, but also nowhere can rise above the original.

Although the remake packs it all in a more usual style than the original, it remains a bizarre story of course. Fortunately, Brolin and Olsen do quite well in this film. Can't be said of Jackson...

Nice.

I'm really not supposed to say this, and I'm probably in the 2%, but I just like the remake better than the original. It's less annoying, a bit more accessible, and there's a lot less types walking around who are annoying as shit.

Although the original is so good in certain scenes that it can't be beat here, this movie sometimes comes with a few quirky scenes. It is a bit simpler and simpler and once seen the original, the twist is no longer new.

Still a cool video nonetheless. Everyone acts well, the film looks good and that was it. Indeed, in some ways it doesn't compare to the original, but I liked this part more.
