Juri, a Red Army deserter, is hiding with 20-year-old Anne. The two are in love. However, their love is ruined. Juri faces an arrest and possibly the death penalty. The couple leaves the country and flees west. They leave behind Anne's 6-month-old daughter, Inga. Growing up with her grandparents, Inga thinks her mother died in a swimming accident twenty-five years ago. A while later she meets Professor Robert, who sends her on her way to her past. He once met Anne during a study group. At first Inga refuses to look for her mother, but then asks for help from Robert. Together they travel through Germany in search of Anne.
